Interview with Zay (@toosurprising)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Im here now on my path to get verified because I’ve been working hard on legitimizing my business and this is the next step to looking more professional. I sell fashion and artwork and I want my customers to be sure that they are buying from a trusted source.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

Since I started marketing myself on Instagram with my hats, I’ve been able to style many artists. I was lucky enough to connect with one of my favorite artists SSG SPLURGE and designed a hat for him that we later released and has been our best seller yet. I’ve come to meet and connect with so many different retailers, customers, and artists. It’s been an amazing experience.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

I recommend staying true to what you believe in and take pride in being original. Take breaks to focus on other different aspects of your life besides the creative side.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

Although SNYC is run mainly by myself, there are many people who have helped along the way. My Mom and my girlfriend are my number 1 supporters when it comes to my business. I definitely could not have done it without them and owe a lot of my success to them. They were the first to finance the brands production early on. S/O to BOBBYNICEE and SSG SPLURGE and all the artists for always supporting the brand

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I recently volunteered at my local public school to host a graffiti art class with the kids. It was a group of about 12 kids and we collectively painted a mural at the school. I also taught them a little about graffiti history and my job as a graffiti artists and fashion designer. I gave away some hats to the kids and truly inspired them and they had a great time.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

“I think you stand under me, if you don’t understand me.” -lil Wayne. I love this quote by wheezy F because sometimes in life when you are pursuing your dreams and goals, people will not understand. And when you try to explain to people why you are doing things in effort to grow, they will talk down on you and your ideas. It’s best to push forward with your goals and keep them close to you. We all function on a different frequency so surround yourself with like minded individuals.
