Interview With Wookey Ale (@WookeyAle)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
In the spring of 2020 (a year that will go down in history), Samuel dreamt of having a local beer for the famous village of Wookey Hole in Somerset. He decided that he couldn’t do this alone so he asked a fellow ale connoisseur Simon to join in partnership with him in making the dream come true. Samuel and Simon decided that they wanted a session ale, which is easy on the pallet and doesn’t leave an aftertaste. That’s when we came up with their first ale ‘Witch Way Home’.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?
We posted an exclusive announcement on IG / FB for a sneak peek of our new beer ‘Halloween Rift’ which we are releasing in late April. Halloween Rift takes its name from a secret cavern situated in the depths of Wookey Hole. Following on from this post, a few days later, I received an email from Trevor Hughes the founder of the cave ‘Halloween Rift’. Trevor stumbled upon a couple of rocks gathered together in October 1982 and in the middle of the rocks was a cave spider. Trevor then started to excavate the rift entrance and found an open passage. Vince Simmonds has substantially taken over from Trevor’s work and has excavated the passage for 500metres with his team of excavators. I contacted both Trevor and Vince and arranged to meet them on 5th April 2022 at Halloween Rift with a couple of our first pale ale beers Witch Way Home and it was fascinating to find out everyone’s story. We have planned an official release with Trevor and Vince for a Saturday at the end of April 2022, Trevor has spoken to the local magazine who will be there to do a press release. It was amazing to get both the founder Trevor Hughes and the latest lead excavator Vince Simmonds together at Halloween Rift again after many years of Trevor not digging there due to moving on to other local digs.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?
Ensure work is delegated equally and support is offered frequently, check-in with colleagues about their mental wellbeing. Most important is sleep; ideally, 6-8 hours of solid sleep and try to remove yourself from the business before going to bed. Make sure you have adequate breaks during the working day.
Have you got things to look forward to, like spending quality time with family and friends or planning a holiday?
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
My wife Rosey has been extremely supportive along the journey so far, Rosey understands that I am driven to succeed and provides me assistance and ideas for the business. This helps to take some pressure away from me as it’s not easy having a full-time job as well as running your own business at the same time because it takes up a lot of time in the evenings and at weekends when you would normally spend this precious time together.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
(need help with this one as the business has only been operating for just over a year)
Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
My life lesson quote comes from the famous Eminem song lose yourself – If you had
One shot, Or one opportunity, To seize everything you ever wanted, In one moment, Would you, capture it, Or just let it slip?
I know many people who have wanted to start a business and have had that one opportunity with fantastic ideas, however, they have not seized that chance. Most people are scared of failure; however, you may fail but you got to remember that failing is good because you learn from it, I have failed in two previous businesses, but you got to get back up and dust yourself off and carry on learning. If you have good friends around you, that are supportive of your business you will succeed.
How can our readers follow you on social media?
They can follow us on IG, Facebook, Twitter, and Untappd @WookeyAle
We update our website on a regular basis at www.wookeyale.co.uk with the latest stockist of where you can purchase our beers from.
Anything specific you’d like to have mentioned in the article?
I would like to mention that we cater to everyone’s pallet, most breweries do not do this whereas we have three traditional ales on draught Pale, Amber, and Bitter for the pub drinkers plus we have opened up the market to the younger generation in providing craft beers.
