Interview with Tyreek Davis (@itstyreek)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Growing up I’ve always watched movies and gained a passion for film and the movies I mainly watched were superhero movies. I’ve always loved superheroes and bringing them into live-action made me love superheroes even more! Especially my favorite superhero ‘Spider-Man’. I started out modeling and wanted build my way into acting. There was one day that I watch Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” with a group of friends in a movie theatre back in December 2018 and they told me to cosplay as the ‘Spider-Man’ character ‘Miles Morales’. This was around the same time I started to explore social media world and joined the app we know today that is TikTok. That same month, I started to make cosplay content in my ‘Miles Morales’ cosplay and I implemented the knowledge I learned from film making and I suddenly went viral and got a lot of praise for doing the cosplay which led to doing more cosplays such as ‘Black Panther’, ‘Sam Wilson (The Falcon and Captain America)’, ‘John Stewart (Green Lantern)’ and more! A couple years later I have gained over 2 Million followers on TikTok. Doing that hard work led me to opportunities with Marvel, Disney, and more! It was one of those things that happened out of the blue as the TikTok platform started to gain recognition as one of the most popular platforms on social media.

Can you share the most interest in exciting happened to you since you started doing this?

The most interesting story that happened to me since I started doing this is traveling to other states like California and New York to meet friends/content creators. Traveling to the west coast and the north in 2021 were my first time out of the south where I’m from. Also to have an opportunities go to premieres/screenings like the ‘Black Widow’ Premiere and ‘Hawkeye’ Premiere and more events in those states are opportunities that I am grateful for.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?

What I recommend to my colleagues in my industry to help them thrive and not “burn out” is that always find the time to rest. I get that we have goals that we all want to achieve in our near future and we are working our hardest to get there but if you have a gut feeling that you need to rest on a certain day than take the day to reconnect with yourself. You would want to go into your passion feeling your best, not your worst.

None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story? *

There are actually two people that I am grateful for that helped me get to where I am today! Those two people are Taya Miller (@tayamillerr) and Megan Jane (@meganjaneart). In 2019, I met both of them when I was starting out on this journey and it was just up from there! When I met Megan Jane, we met at the first con I ever went to and our friendship built from there! When I met Taya Miller for the first time, we decided we wanted to meet and do a photoshoot of the ‘Spider-Man’ characters ‘Miles Morales’ and ‘Gwen Stacy (Spider-Gwen)’ and our friendship was great ever since then! As we made content together, it was more than just making content and helping each other grow on social media, it was more about the great friendship we have built with each other. Bonds go further than just wanting clout from people.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I have used my success to bring goodness to the world. As an African American sharing content to the world on social media, dealing with racism has been a problem that us Black people and POCs (People Of Color) have been dealing with for a very long time and it’s still happening in the world today. There has always been a bigger purpose behind cosplaying superheroes such as ‘Miles Morales (Spider-Man)’, ‘Black Panther’, ‘Sam Wilson (The Falcon and Captain America)’ from Marvel and more. Children that have the same skin color like me can watch someone that looks just like them. Along this journey I’m pursuing, I do my best to raise awareness for the Black community and people of color. This is bigger than myself and I stand by that.

Do you have a favorites “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

I do have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”! My favorite life lesson quote is “It’s a leap of faith”. That quote is from one of my favorite movies ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’! How that was relevant to me in my life is that I know if I don’t go out and take the risks to do what I want in my life and live my life the way I want to live it, I will regret not going after what I feel I deserve in my life. You have to take that leap to achieve greatness.

How can our readers follow you on social media?

You can find me on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitch!

Anything specific you’d like to have mentioned in the article? *

What I would like to have mentioned in the article is that my love for cosplay started out with me having a love for Anime. My very first cosplay that I ever did was ‘Naruto Uzumaki’ from the Anime ‘Naruto’.  The character ‘Naruto’ once said “If you don’t like your destiny, don’t accept it. Instead, have the courage to change it the way you want it to be.” That quote stuck with me ever since I heard that and the Anime inspired me to cosplay! There was something in ‘Naruto’ that I seen in me and that was to never give up and live life the way I want to live.
