Interview with Storage Auction Pirate (@storagepirate)
Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
I spent a large portion of my life as a furniture mover . Many years back breaking work . Barely would get by and was strenuous. I dabbled in resale taking home free items from homes I moved and then reselling them at the flea market. When the big housing crash came less people moved and gave away less free items to sell. So I looked for new ways to get things . Enjoyed the selling of used items for extra money .
So late one day we comeback from a job and there is a auction at my company and dan Dotson of storage wars was doing the auction. This was way back before any shows . So I attended the auction and purchased a lot of items for $1. Yes $1.00 and took them home . Turned out one was a expensive amp. And I sold it that night for $600 . Literally quit my job the next day. And started buying storage units and estate auctions . And here we are present day .
Can you share the most interest in what exciting happened to you since you started doing this?
This job has had so many exciting things happen . It’s so hard to pin point one . We literally are the original spark of the storage business as a content creation. I’ve done so many things since starting this from newspaper and radio shows. New specials like eye on the bay, to literally joining the cast of storage hunters . And those adventures always stick in my brain. But as far as treasure hunting is concerned My single most favorite moment is the time I opened a safe and found $26,420 in cash money. It was a game changer and a spark in chasing the treasure like no other . We have had several amazing finds since like a babe Ruth signed baseball to a rare lebron james rookie card. To things like 63 pounds of silver . And so much more. This entire job is a mood. A way of life. A true dream job. With much risk behind the reward.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?
Don’t over do it. Stay steady and on pace. Don’t buy to anyone expensive units that drain your motivation and pocket book. Find a steady pace of listing to the internet . You need to have a good outlet to get rid of stuff and the flea market is probably the hardest and lost time consuming . So you want to make sure you conserve energy . As you are gonna need a lot of time and energy to make it happen. I say this openly and honestly very often . This business isn’t for everyone .
None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person you are grateful to who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
I don’t have a single person I’m grateful for above another . Because I feel it takes a village to raise a man. I have met a lot of people along the way of my journey as a storage buyer and as a business owner and content creator . There is much luck in having content creator behind the business itself. As multiple revenue streams are always helpful for your time and money . But along the way i have had some great help in both departments . As a reseller I have many friends who I have teamed up with and they have all taught me a little something towards the big picture . Like my friend rick Ashe we were partners for some time . And he taught me how to slow down and milk my profits . I also have had a lot of friends who make videos who have helped me to come out of my shell and be able to be better in front of the camera which is priceless . Like my friend Alex (storage stalker) . As well as my friend Jack ( locker nuts ) who has been a good advisor in alot of business aspects that have all been new to me along the way . I buy units with both and as well get the luxury of kicking around video nonsense which is a tough avenue to get assistance and help in . Life is a big learning lesson . And always need to be improving your self and your game in all areas . So it’s been helpful to surround yourself with those doing similar things as you and similar goals .
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
My entire passion behind doing the things I do has been to show the world they are not alone . Most focus on glitz and glamour . And the road to get there is left out . Many in this world are looking for a way. To grow , to survive , to live , to find happiness etc etc. And I believe many like me have had a very hard chance to make it happen . I try to be a very transparent person in showing the world we don’t all come from rich families . From perfect situations . Have all the tools , means , and opportunities to make it in this cold world . Many are just looking for a reason to smile and laugh. I know as I’ve been there. My childhood and younger life was one of severe turmoil and poverty. I try to be a light in a dark place so to speak. Example just a few years ago i was homeless on the streets with full custody of both my kids . Instead of not showing that and focus on wins and jackpots for sake of those watching . I decided to show the world how fast it can fall apart . And how to do what I do with nothing . How you can live in car and hotel and run a full resale business and change your life for better . Which is closer to the chances most have then then picture perfect chance . Transparency is everything in my eyes .
Do you have a favourite “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
Perception is the key to live ! I spent much of my life with stinking thinking . And thoughts are belief is so important . You can only go as far as you believe. And only what you believe can transpire so to speak. So many don’t believe they can. Don’t believe there worthy etc etc & perception plus deep into this. As soon as i adjusted how i think . How I view things . What I focus on. So many other things changed. Show gratitude for the moment let the rest unfold . I see to often and in my former self . Saying can’t happen instead of focusing on it happening . Which is all perception in my eyes . Thoughts become things .
of criticism regarding your work, so don’t worry. Give your best, and always try to improve yourself.
