Interview with Mr. AVO (@avo_here)
Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
As a young kid I used to watch my grandfather sing in church every Sunday. His passion for singing and bringing joy to others sparked my interest in music. Knowing that my singing was extremely poor, I tried to explore my interest for music in other forms. At the age of 14 I discovered that EDM was starting to flourish. That’s when I first began to deeply connect with music as a form of art, but my studies still stood beyond this passion. However, when I was 16 I decided to explore this passion further, so I started to play on a DJ set, learning everything from YouTube by myself from home. Nevertheless, I was still unsure on what I wanted to do with these skills, so I decided to put this ‘hobby’ on stand by once again due to university studies. Four years went by and I had the chance to join an Afro House Music events company, created by two of my friends. Months went by when I realised I had the opportunity to play in one of my own events and I fell in love with it. I know this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.
Can you share the most interest in exciting happened to you since you started doing this?
I don’t think I can mention a single story in specific, because every single day is comprised of an interesting story. I try to think of my life like a book and every single day is a new chapter.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?
The clubbing industry is extremely exhausting, so it is crucial to know how to keep a balanced lifestyle. This includes: eating healthy, exercising regularly and not touching alcohol whilst performing. Despite the fact that I love every single second of what I do, this is my job and I have to be professional about it. Knowing that this kind of lifestyle motivates you to drink alcohol and take drugs it is important to understand that it is your reputation on the line and a single action can destroy your career. Thus, it is crucial to know how to separate pleasure from work. As I mentioned previously, pursuing a healthy lifestyle is key to stay on top of your game and avoid burning out.
None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
There are multiple people (from family members to friends), that I am extremely grateful for. However, there is in one person in specific that I owe almost everything I have achieved today in this industry, and that person is Francis Mercier. Francis helped me since day 1. One of the most important things he did that made me explode, was to bring me to Boston with him and trusting me to play with him back-to-back. From the moment I posted that DJ set on instagram, I have been booked constantly week-in week-out. Every time I have doubts I call him and I always trust his advice because he knows me and my style inside-out. He’ll always tell me the truth to make me better, even if it’s not always what I want to hear.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
For me success is not about being famous or having money, it is to make others happy whilst doing what I love most. By playing music, I feel that I can bring joy to everyone’s hearts, joining together a variety of people from different backgrounds. To be honest, I know I have not reached my full potential yet and still have a long way to go. However, seeing the impact that I have on others when I play music definitely feels right and I hope it will only get better, as success grows. My end goal is to be happy by making others happy.
Do you have a favorite “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
With the current situation in Ukraine, I knew that I couldn’t stay home and ignore what was happening right next door. When I was given the opportunity to help Ukranian refugees, I did not hesitate to drive there with 2 friends with the objective of bringing them medical supplies and driving people back to a safer country. It was definitely an eye-opening experience that made me realise how such a small gesture can have such a massive impact on other people’s lives. As my quote says: “Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart. If you always give, you will always have.” I went to Ukraine with all my heart with the intention of giving and in return I received love and a wake-up call to never taking life for granted.
