Interview with Monalisa  (@modelmonalisa06)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I started modeling 16 years ago… my first photo shoot was to take new pictures after graduating. I immediately fell in love with the camera and have been shooting with different photographers and creating a name for myself. I’ve been on multiple magazine covers and features. I’ve been featured in music videos with Lil Wayne, nicki Minaj, Sean Kingston, Sean Paul, and more. I’ve done commercials for the sprouts grocery store and Verizon. Also been on tv shows like the south beach, tow, and the meadows. I’m proud of my many accomplishments and continuing to make a name for myself.

Can you share the most interest in what exciting happened to you since you started doing this?

The people I met and networked with have been the most interesting. People who are still in my life now. Another exciting thing is seeing my face on a national Sprouts commercial and knowing the hard work that came out of it.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?

First thing first, you got to love what you do. Consistency is key. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it! If you love it, it will show on your work. None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a person you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

There are a lot of photographers and fans that have helped me stay in the industry. This modeling industry isn’t easy, and there are multiple times I wanted to stop cause of being told I’m not good enough or the type of modeling I’m doing is inappropriate. But my passion and some photographers like X Bryan, Santos, and Ghost town, to name a few, kept me going and made me realize why I love what I do.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

As a black model, I’ve been able to bring awareness to the Black Lives Matter movement and let models that look like I know not to let anyone treat you anyway or look over you because of your color. I’ve done charity work through benefits for Juneteenth and black history month. I’ve been able to educate others who don’t look like me about my culture and have an uncomfortable dialogue about things I have been through for them to understand me a bit more.

Do you have a favorite “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

My favorite quote is from Steve Jobs, saying the only way to do great work is to love what you do. As I mentioned, you have to love what you do to make a great impression on people. Being confident and loving what I do has kept me in this industry for 16 years, and I have more years to come.
