Interview with Michael Genay (@Michael_genay)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
I am turning 40 years old this year, and I have worked my hands to the bone for corporate America. Every job I’ve ever had has had one thing in common, leaving me with an empty void inside. I’ve walked many years knowing I am meant for something other than construction/factory/office work. I have finally found my calling in helping others. My social media family continues to grow, and we continue to change/save lives every day!
Can you share the most exciting story that happened to you since you started doing this?
I should start by saying I am a recovering alcoholic who got sober on November 22nd, 2020. I started tik tok as something fun to do with my wife and kids.. funny dances and family fun, etc.; little did I know what was yet to come! One rainy day, I had a terrible mental health day and struggled to stay sober. I decided I was not going to run from the storm anymore; I would face it! So I went and sat in the shower and posted my first ever video about sobriety, and it went viral! That changed my life forever, and now we are linked up with doctors, Councilor, Therapists, RNs, etc., across the nation, putting out content about mental health, addiction, recovery, sobriety, domestic violence, and much more! Truly helping people, and there is no better feeling in this world! “Let’s go, champs!”
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?
Stay focused, stay driven, stay passionate! Do not fall victim to negative comments. Listen to feedback, both good and bad!
None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
I have to give all my love to “My Queen” Sarah! She is the one who sets the stage for all of this. I was actively killing myself through my alcohol addiction while living with her. One morning she came to me and said, “ I can’t sit here and watch you kill yourself anymore; if you want to be an alcoholic, that is fine, but you can not do it here and not around me” so being full of pride and ego I said, “fine that’s exactly what I’ll do!” I left with my trash bag of clothes and my beer and hit the road. After weeks of sleeping in my car and blackout events, I woke up on a cold floor feeling the lowest of the low. I made the call back to Sarah and said, “I’m done, I don’t want this life anymore” she replied, “come to me and let’s get you through this” I drove to her house. We dumped out all my alcohol.. with tears in my eyes, I told her, “I’m so scared” she grabbed my hand and walked me to the bedroom, where she cared for me through my three-day detox. I have been sober since, and we are more in love than ever! I can’t thank Sarah enough! I love you, my queen!
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
Since my content is heavily revolved around addiction and recovery, I get so many messages from people worldwide saying how I have saved their lives! Saving the lives of those struggling with addiction and mental health issues!
Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
“Life lessons do not have to be a life sentence, don’t let your past control your future” now, I’m not sure if I had made that up or heard it from somewhere else, but I love it and connect with it. So much! I grew up in poverty, a gang neighborhood, scrounging daily for food, no hot water, mildew-covered walls, roof leaks, roaches, rats, head lice, etc.; it was very rough! I’m a high school dropout and multiple trips to jail… I’ve had every reason not to succeed, but here I am today, standing tall and proud, speaking to people worldwide saying, “you are not alone,” “let’s go, champs.”
How can our readers follow you on social media?
You can google Michael Genay and find me everywhere, but I’m mainly active on tik tok @magic.mike.g and Instagram @michael_genay
Anything specific you’d like to have mentioned in the article?
I grew up without “family,” but now I have family worldwide by spreading love and speaking my truth. Family does not have to be blood, and YOU choose who sits at your table! Let’s go, champs!
