Interview with MGP Nutrition|Max Golf Pro @mgpnutrition
Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
Thanks for having us! We’re Max & Cat Colman, and we launched MGP Nutrition in 2015 after spotting a gap in the market for healthy & delicious refreshments for the golf course.
Max had previously been a professional golfer, and had been overweight as a young adult. This had led to health problems, and as a result he needed to improve his nutritional intake. However, he found that when he went to golf clubs the only refreshments available were unhealthy products, such as fizzy drinks and chocolate bars. So, he began making his own protein shakes, taking along powdered protein and mixing it in a plastic shaker while on the course. As you can imagine, this was time consuming and messy.
Years later, Max and Cat decided to create a range of ready-made healthy refreshments for the golf course. Max along with Cat, who was a former professional dancer and keen golfer, set about producing recipes that delivered on health, convenience, and above all, taste. The range has developed over the years, and the current range contains the best tasting sport nutrition products you will ever find!
MGP now offers a selection of delicious hydration drinks that are packed with vitamins and health benefits, and contain less than half the sugar of other sports drinks, as well as high protein, low sugar, vegan friendly energy bars and cookies. The brand is now enjoyed by golfers and non golfers alike..
Can you share the most interest in exciting happened to you since you started doing this?
It’s been quite a journey! 7 years on and we’ve been through all the struggles of a start up business, and we have managed to grow the company from just an idea to selling 1 million products a year! When we first launched the brand in 2015 we used to load up our jeep with drinks (back then we had just 1 drink – a vanilla protein shake), and we would drive to all the top golf clubs in the UK and hand deliver them. It definitely wasn’t the most efficient or cost effective way to deliver the products, but it did mean we got to meet our customers face to face and get our brand out there. These days we have a big warehouse dispatching products every day and we offer our customers next day courier delivery, but we had to start somewhere! One of the most interesting things we did was back in 2018 (pre Brexit), when we drove all the way through France, Spain and Portugal, visiting golf clubs along the way and growing the brand across Europe. It was a 30 day trip with lots of driving, lots of hotel stays and lots of meetings, but it was a great experience.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?
No-one realises how many challenges you face as entrepreneurs until you are in that position, but you have to stay focused and strong enough to tackle each challenge head on. From your supply chain, to your fulfilment, to your delivery, to your cashflow, to your sales, to your marketing, there are a thousand challenges that can crop up! Our tip would be to stay calm and work with a business partner that you trust. We’re lucky that as a husband and wife team we share the same goal and vision for the business, and it makes the tough times bearable when you’re both in the same boat.
None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
For us, we have always been partners in the business from the very start, so we have relied on each other. We have also been incredibly grateful to our various investors along the way who have supported the brand and allowed us to grow, and also to our customers who buy the products, and to our great team that we have working with us today.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
Our low sugar, low fat, healthy refreshments have given people the alternative to other products that are not good for you – and nothing makes us happier than when someone gets in touch to say they love our products and we’ve helped them feel better about themselves. We’re both really passionate about health and fitness, and so to hear that our products are helping people reach their goals, whether that’s on the golf course, or in the gym, or just in life in general, that’s very rewarding.
We’re also so pleased that we have been able to grow the company to the point where we employ people and have created jobs for people in our industry. The golf industry is a very male dominated industry, and we’re really proud to have a 50:50 male:female team and no gender pay gap.
Do you have a favourite “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
” Keep chipping away! This is so relevant to our business, as sometimes you feel like you’re getting nowhere, but if you keep doing what you’re doing, and you do a little bit every day, then eventually that adds up to quite a lot over time. At the start we used to make sure we did 3 things each day to help towards where we wanted the business to go. And after 7 years of 3 things a day that compounds to be a lot of improvement! So just show up every day and keep chipping away – that would be our best advice to any entrepreneurs out there. Then you look back after each month or year and see how far you’ve actually come.
