Interview with Matt Green (@mattgreen.jgm)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I am a company Founder and Director (my company is called JGM Science Tutors), and I started my career with a Masters’s Degree from Imperial College London. Before running JGM full time, I was Head of Department at Bushey Meads School. JGM began in 2017, and we now have over 70 fully qualified tutors on our books and provide science tuition to over 300 students a week across the UK, New Zealand, and Dubai. Two years ago, I decided to combine my love for rap and science skills to create the Rapping Science Teacher! My total view count on social media has now surpassed over 10 million views across all online platforms. In the last few months alone, my followers on TIK TOK have reached nearly 200,000; subjects ranging from Respiration to Electrolysis were teamed with soundtracks from DRAKE, STORMZY, SKEPTA, and THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR. I’ve been humbled by what students tell me, as I’ve had thousands reach out to me to thank me and tell me how much of a help the videos are.

Can you share the most exciting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

Having school kids call out my name in the street and ask me for my autograph! Plus, hearing someone recite my songs word for word was surreal!

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

I live by super early starts to get the highest priority tasks done before 8:30 am. So number 1 would be 4:15 am started. Once priorities are out of the way, you can be in a more relaxed spirit the rest of the day as you feel that sense of accomplishment plus having nothing hanging over you. It got me down from 5 days a week teaching full time to 3 days, then eventually 2, and then eventually 0. Now I purely work for myself. My second thing would probably be writing out task lists and plans and prioritizing what things on those lists will make the BIGGEST difference in getting you to your goal. Much working in a school does things other people ask of you that are often not in your interests. For most people, half of “burnout” is caused by being busy with what appears to be an ‘insane’ amount of things to do. But if you listed all these things, probably only 20% of them will get you towards your goals. Sounds more accessible than it is and requires skill, but once you’ve got reasonably good at that, you can probably chuck 50% of unnecessary “secondary activities” out of the window. Again, getting good at this was the only way I could scale my business while working as a full-time teacher (a job renowned for the enormous amount of time it takes) while having a growing family of 3 at home (aged 3,2, and 0 at the time!)

None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person whom you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

100% my wife. She is my biggest supporter. She is an amazing woman and has had faith from the very beginning, and pretty much takes care of all things child and home, so I can focus my time on building my business and my social media presence. It would not have been possible, with three kids so young and born so close in age, to grow at this rate otherwise. I am fortunate to have her! We’ve been together since we were 16 and 17 and got married young – it’s been 16 years now, so we must be pretty fond of each other!

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I always wanted to be a proud business owner and provide a quality service, but I wanted a way to be able to help students that cannot afford tuition freely – and hence I do what I do with my science raps online. The cost of production of the videos has only been possible of the company’s success.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

I’m a big believer in the results of hard work being around the corner – even when you can’t see it. This was especially true with TikTok. After 100 hours of video creation and six months, I have no views and a follow count consisting of only people I knew! However, I suddenly decided to change a few fonts and colors, and bingo – half a million views and 20,000 followers overnight! This was also true of my primary business, my first one failed due to a business partner letting me down, and then I had to start a new one from scratch. After about a year of grinding, having a second child, working full-time, and seeing my dad passed, the company only had three clients. However, right around the corner, this was able to jump to 10 and then 30. This was the ticket that allowed a drop-down from full-time work to part-time, and I could repeat the process two more times every time I gained more time. But the principle is always to grind, assuming that breakthrough is literally behind a wall just in front that you can’t see.
