Interview with Keith Lorren @thespiceking

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

After graduating from Nova, Lorren (M.B.A. ’06) traveled to Japan to stay with friends. Returning with spices and making fried chicken for friends and family, I realized that food and spices were my true calling. Working for the Abu Dhabi Education Council in Dubai, I shared cooking tips and meals with co-coworkers and explored the region to learn about the culture. I chronicled my experience through a scrapbook of photos and notes. “Communicating through food is a great unifier; I enjoyed the cultural interaction.”

Can you share the most interest in what exciting happened to you since you started doing this?

I continued my world travels by meeting with and cooking alongside professional chefs. As a way of thanking people I met, I sent a personal note and a pack of spices I  used for cooking the meals. This gave me the opportunity to promote my spices and gain cultural knowledge from residents. Soon, by word of mouth, my spice blends became items of high demand. “I didn’t realize this was becoming a business.”

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?

Tips I would recommend to my peers in this field would be to be open and listen to the views of others. Don’t let all the hate comments bring you down. Instead, look at all the positive comments and don’t second guess yourself.

None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

I think everyone I’ve met on my path has helped in some way. Mainly I thank the people who used to steal from my house, the people who have spoken about me behind my back. Thank you everyone for making me a stronger person. You have driven me to never want to give up. My journey is just beginning.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I just try to motivate and inspire people. I feel I’m here to help people in any way. I love seeing people do well in life.

Do you have a favorite “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

“don’t do anything you’re not passionate about.”

Anything specific you’d like to have mentioned in the article?

After winning school competitions of his own, I am working to change the lives of those who share my passion for cooking. I am offering a $2,000 cash prize to the individual who makes the most creative use of my spice mixtures.
