Interview With Kate Rubenstein (@thakaterose)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I posted a video on Tik Tok about a Pearphone that got 31 Million Views, and it was even noticed by the cast of Victorious. A Pearphone is a prop that was on Nickelodeon shows that my generation grew up with. This led me to start a nostalgic theme throughout social media. Due to the pandemic, many people had been looking back on the “good old days,” and I am happy to have brought some light during dark times. After this, my following count became 240,000, and I am still shocked by it. Whenever I go to a largely populated place, such as a football game, a concert, or an event, I constantly count. It is still surreal.

Can you share the most exciting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

I was in public, and a little girl came up to me and said, “OMG aren’t you the Pearphone Girl?” And I stuttered and replied, “Y-yes, yes I am.” I didn’t even know what to say. The fact that a stranger knew me was just crazy to me. I got more used to it as time went by, and I have developed multiple nicknames now (Nostalgirl, Nostalgia Girl, Pearphone Girl, The girl that got 31 million views!!). My life has been changed forever. I recently got into my top college choice (Ithaca College) where I will be majoring in Integrated Marketing & Communications in the Roy H. Park School to continue this field.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?

I would recommend remaining consistent. A lot of creators tend to get famous for one thing and try and steer their followers in another direction. For example, somebody’s views could be solely based on comedy videos, and if that creator tries to become a singer, they will burn out and lose that initial following. It is crucial to keep supporters engaged, and give them what they want.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

I am grateful for my Mom and Dad, and I know I am supposed to only pick one person, but none of this would’ve been possible without either of them. Growing up in a house with two of the smartest, funniest, and most driven people surely helped me along the way. My Mom is a CEO of a wholesale company called JOOR, where she commutes into New York City frequently. I have always admired her ability to raise four kids, and take on a role as a woman in business. Not only does her drive inspire me, but her encouragement does as well. Even when I hit rough patches, she is always there to guide me and push me to the best of my ability. Nostalgia is my social media theme, and a huge reason that I am very nostalgic is because of my Mom. She gave me such an amazing childhood, that it’s difficult to not want to go back in time! In the future, I want to be just as strong as her, and also be a woman in business. As for my Dad, he is a great man, and constantly provides humor in my life. A lot of my content includes comedy that I developed from him. He is also extremely intelligent and is always trying his hardest to protect my family. Additionally, he always puts the ones he loves first, even if he has to make sacrifices. He constantly helps me with social media whether it is something as little as coming up with a username to something big like planning my future in the social media world. Technology plays a key role in our society, and it is wonderful to have a father who is extremely tech-savvy and can lend a hand. I wish to be just as technologically smart as my dad when I’m older, and I understand that success takes sacrifice.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

All the money I have made has been donated to Suicide Prevention. Mental health is a priority to me, and social media can impact it negatively. My goal is to make social media a healthy and happy place.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

“Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional” -Walt Disney This is relevant to my life because nostalgia is the main focus of my content. Even though I am growing up, it does not mean I have to stop being imaginative and creative. Childhood can be the happiest time in someone’s life, and there’s no reason that we cannot still be that happy at any age.
