Interview with Kale My Name @kalemyname

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

When I moved to this country over 7 years ago I am not sure that I even knew what Kale is. I definitely did not know about cauliflower. When I applied for restaurant jobs, they offered me position as a host, because I had no serving or bartending experience, so I gladly accepted. I learned how to serve, make drinks, bartend, and how to lead by example. Not too long after, I became a Floor Manager. I could see that I was becoming successful in the career world and I wanted to build more success in my personal life as well. I desired to live healthier and exercise more. SInce I was truly doing great, I thought, “why not give something back?” I tried being nice to people, helping others, and I started following the moto: “Be kind to everyone with no reason. “ Yes. I said everyone. I then realized I’m not being kind to animals because I was eating them. I started learning about all the torture that needs to be done in order for that piece of meat to be on my plate. I watched YouTube video “Meet Your Meat.” The video was 12 minutes long, but I knew in first two minutes that I’ll never eat meat again! That was one of the best decisions I have ever made and haven’t looked back since. Oh Kale Yeah I’ve learned a whole lot about that powerful plant. Veganism led me to eat foods that I never dreamed of trying and I’m discovering something new every day. After successfully performing in the role of Floor Manager for awhile, I knew I could do more. I worked hard, which led me to the rule of General Manager. I was very excited; however, after doing it for a while, I longed to go even further. It seemed there was no advancing in my career after General Manager – I was wrong. So, I decided to take an even bigger step and make the dream of owning my own vegan restaurant true! Together with great team of people, I’ve been working hard to make this happen and here we are! Over 2 years later we are declared Best Vegan Restaurant in Chicago by Chicago Reader and Best Vegan Restaurant in the country by VegNews

Can you share the most interest in exciting happened to you since you started doing this?

Letter I shared with customers on our anniversary, it was very emotional: It has been over two years of Kale My Name and I thought I should say something but I am not sure I can put into words all of the gratitude and love that I have. When I immigrated to this country 7 years ago, I started working in the restaurant industry from day one. I was so grateful for the opportunities that I’ve been given and I truly loved every boss that I’ve ever worked for. They taught me so much about the business and what it means to provide quality customer service. I got to meet many incredible people over the years and built many regular customers for the lovely businesses that I’ve worked for. Whats amazing to me is that I have never experienced customers loving one place the way you love Kale My Name. Visiting us twice a day, picking up 4 times a week, traveling 150 miles to get food from us, or ordering delivery for the entire family 50 times in the first six months. These are the things I have never seen before. When you write reviews – those are the most beautiful love letters! When we were hurt – you’ve helped repair those broken windows. When indoor dining wasn’t allowed – you helped us build up the patio. When we were far away – you’ve sent the most wonderful messages of support! You’ve shared about us on your social media, so others would know we exist and sent them our way with your recommendations. It helps so much to overcome all the fears I have of operating business during pandemic. In all honesty, I was terrified and I still am, but this magic you have created between us helps! I’ve built relationships with so many of you, even with all the restrictions, where we can’t even shake hands, I know you. I know your names, I recognize your voices over the phone, I know your allergies, food preferences and your dogs do hug me when they come in. We just can’t help that. I’m so looking forward to meeting many more of you, so we can all keep pushing together towards plant based future! It doesn’t matter if you are vegan or not, when you eat at #kalemyname, you are saving animals, you are saving the earth and I love you for that. So, I hope you know that the hand written hearts you receive on our eco friendly packaging are pure honesty because you’ve been nothing short of INCREDIBLE. T H A N K Y O U ! Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?

Love what you do! Take care of your employees and your customers!

None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

Tabitha Brown! She is now our business partner and co-owner of our Los Angeles location.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

Plant based food does so much for the earth! Example is just our past weekend! Over 2 thousand customers in 2 days! 2320 meals were served in 2 days!!! We are 100% plant based restaurant. According to cowspiracy calculations, 2320 plant based meals saves 401,500 gallons of water and 365 animals. In only two days. That’s the biggest reason I’m so incredibly grateful and happy Kale My Name got so popular in non vegan community. If we keep like this we truly can make a difference! 🙏♥️

Do you have a favorite “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
