Interview with Jason Cabell(@jasoncabellofficial)
Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
I was in the military and spent the first half of my life as a warrior. I knew I needed to get involved in the arts in some way for my second act. I can’t dance, sing, or paint so I ending up writing and directing..
Can you share the most interest in exciting happened to you since you started doing this?
Nine years ago I was a background actor on Modern Family. Since then I’ve directed Nic Cage, Laurence Fishburne, Barry Pepper and I’m about to direct an episode of a major network TV show.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?
Learn leadership. You either have the creative or you don’t. Being able to lead in difficult or impossible situations will take you far.
None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
Laurence Fishburne has been a big mentor for me. Brilliant man. As a director Chris Chulak has been a great influence and been tremendously generous with his time and knowledge.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
I’m doing everything I can to help other Vets succeed and get help if they need it.
Do you have a favourite “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
” Never squash anyones dreams. When I was trying to become a Navy SEAL I went to take an early assessment test. I didn’t know how to swim. I did okay with all the other physical activity but when it came time for the water portion I couldn’t even swim a lap and almost drown. The man I was working with expected for him to send me away. He said “well, you drank 1/2 the pool. Try and drink a little less water every day and you’ll be alright.” I worked hard and less than 2 years later I made it through BUD/s and became a SEAL.
