Interview with Jamal Antone (@cutzbymal)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
Graduation is when it all starts—trying to find a career path. As everyone knows, college is always the first choice. So I went to college, and everything was going well! One night, I watched YouTube videos, and a barber appeared, so I started watching barber videos. From there, it just became a consistent thing for me. I knew barbering was where my heart was. Then I began to teach myself, and I blew up from there as time went along! Three years later, and now I’m one of the most famous barbers in Alabama!
Can you share the most exciting story that happened to you since you started doing this?
The most exciting story was when I came across this young boy I inspired. He loved everything about me being a barber! He also knew that he wanted to do so I looked into it! He is currently 15, and he will soon be the next aspiring barber! Impacting other’s life is the most significant thing I love about being a barber.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?
KNOW YOUR WORTH! When you’re tired, don’t overwork yourself! Everyone has their limit, and in this industry, this is huge. People want services, of course, but there comes a time when the barber needs a break too! Self Care is a big thing in being a long-time barber.
None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
Michelle Campbell Crittenden! She is a hairstylist in the same shop I worked in before obtaining my own! Her shop is The House Of Glamour, and it has helped me in beautiful ways. Looking for a way to get my license initially, I didn’t know which way to turn! She took me in as an apprentice and taught me how everything is supposed to be run! The professional way it should be run! I’m so grateful for her!
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
I donate to people in need, give free haircuts occasionally to loyal and consistent clients, and I’m about to start a “CutzByMal” scholarship for senior high school students looking for an extra scholarship for college or trade school!
Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending. – C.S. Lewis
There comes a time in life when you stumble, but you have to get back up. There were times when you questioned whether you love what you do! But you have to stay encouraged. Being a barber is not easy and becomes a bit tedious at times. You have to remind yourself it was a reason you started doing this! This is what you love to do! So it just can be a challenge, but I believe everyone faces this from time to time!

Anything specific you’d like to have mentioned in the article?
I’m grateful for my mom and dad! They are everything to me! Without them, I would be nowhere close to where I currently am! Even though I make mistakes in my life, they never give up on me, and I love them so much for that!
