Interview with DJ K-Rock Young Spielberg (@djkrocknj)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Coming from humble beginnings, at the age of 8 I started playing with my father’s old record player in his garage. I remember going through his record collection & attempting to scratch certain parts of the song. He often complained I was messing up his records but I wanted to duplicate the sounds I heard from popular DJs on the radio & TV. I often emulated great DJs like Kid Capri, Jazzy Jeff, & Funkmaster Flex just to name a few. I would connect a microphone to a stereo & act like I was entertaining large crowds. I knew from then I wanted to connect with people through music.

Can you share the most interest in exciting happened to you since you started doing this?

My biggest goal was to DJ on NYC’s Hot 97. I grew up listening to Funkmaster Flex bring entertainment & energy to radio. In 2015 I received the opportunity to DJ on the very station I grew up listening to. It was so surreal to me walking through the building & meeting all the DJs I looked up to. Being able to connect with the entire city over the airwaves was the greatest feeling & accomplishment for me.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?

To never give up. There’s no doubt that you will experience your fair share of disappointments, but you must keep your end goal in mind. Also know your worth. A lot of upcoming DJs get taken advantage of by promoters. This often happens because promoters know that upcoming DJs want to get booked for their events, so they pay them less than what they’re worth.

None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

I’ve known the legendary DJ Chuck Chillout since I was 8 years old. He noticed I had a passion for music at a very early age. We lost touch for some time but reconnected later on my DJ journey. He noticed how hardworking & consistent I was when it came to providing the best entertainment & party experience. In 2015 Chuck Chillout leveraged his radio contacts to get me opportunities to DJ on Hot 97. I will be forever grateful for those opportunities.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

Being a Dj is more than just music to me. It’s about creating an experience where you can enjoy all of your senses through great vibrations and positive energy. No matter how stressful your day was, I pride myself on curating an unforgettable party experience like no to other. This experience has created memories worth remembering for lifetimes.

Do you have a favorite “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t you’re right.” With anything that you want to accomplish, you have to believe in yourself. Half of this game is talent, but the other half is surely mental. Early on in my career I would compare myself to other colleagues & question my own abilities. That undoubtedly lead to my performance being affected on big stages. The second I switched my mindset & focused on myself I unlocked my full potential & began to truly shine.
