Interview with David Olusegun (@dolusegun)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

The purpose is everything, even though it’s been something that has always been in mind. The concept hit home even more when my brother passed away two years ago. He was only 25, and it made me realize that tomorrow is not promised and that you have to be purpose-driven in life. I started Creative Control Ventures just under a year ago, and it’s been fantastic working with celebrities, creators, and influencers and helping them bring their business ideas to life. Working in the entertainment industry for over ten years with companies like MTV, Hit Entertainment, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, The FA, Warner Music Group, and more gave me the insights and knowledge to provide the best platform to launch, build and scale creator-owned business. I’ve always believed my purpose was to provide the platform to help people’s dreams come to fruition, and CCV is a significant extension of this.

Can you share the most exciting story that happened to you since you started doing this?

It’s just how many people have found it possible to fulfill their entrepreneurial ambition.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?

1. Don’t be hard on yourself. There is no one right way to prevent burnout. It usually takes some time to develop a list of strategies and try them out before working out what is best for you and your lifestyle. 2. A crucial first step when preventing physical and emotional exhaustion is prioritizing healthy eating, exercise, and better sleeping habits. Be intentional about scheduling time in your diary to do physical activity at least once a week. 3. Don’t be afraid to set boundaries at work by clarifying expectations and responsibilities. Learn to say no. It’s impossible to be everything to everyone. Besides, saying ‘no’ means you can say ‘yes’ to what you want to do. 4. Get support. When overwhelmed or stressed, there can be a natural tendency to disconnect from people and isolate yourself. Speaking to people you trust and who care about you can help you gain a fresh perspective. 5. Perfectionism and burnout go hand in hand. We live in a world dominated by the pursuit of perfection, and it is easy to translate this into our work life. It makes us too self-critical when completing tasks. Write down what is most important to you to achieve — and get into prioritizing those tasks.

None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person whom you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

Many people have helped me along the way, from colleagues, mentors, business partners, and more, but my mum has to be the most significant person I credit with where I am today. She inspires me to dream big and love big – She has a heart of gold, and I’m so thankful for her! She’s my fiercest supporter and advocate and is always there to help, pray and give advice. She’s instilled in me the following values: being kind, humble, and hardworking; along with a few, she inspires me to travel and always take chances. She is my hero. My safe place. She inspires me to be kind and empathetic. She inspires genuine gratitude to be humble myself, be aware of the abundance of blessings I have and know how precious life is. She inspires me to rejoice in times of joy and find laughter in the trials and pain. She inspires me to know my limitless potential, see my worth and beauty and not believe anything less. She inspires strength and confidence. My mum has been my biggest cheerleader from day 1, and I couldn’t be more grateful that I get to be her kid.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I want what I do to inspire the world to dream and bring that idea/concept to life.

Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

Legacy is not what you leave behind but the impact you have made in people’s lives directly and indirectly. For me, this quote has changed the way I live.
