Interview with Chanell (@by.chanell)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
I’m a content creator + photographer based in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. I launched my TikTok account 2 months ago to share behind the scenes of my passion for photography and recreate scenes from my favorite comfort movies. Since January 17, 2022, I’ve grown with +50k followers and reached over 20k views per upload – I post a new video everyday.

I just created a public Instagram page last fall to serve as my photography portfolio, but I am quickly evolving it to become a page to share more of my life. (: I just hit 100 followers last month and today I’m resting at 2100k — as a video reel of mine has gone viral (1.8 million views and counting).

I was formerly a content creator on YouTube from 2006-2019 with 40k subscribers + 3 million total video views — this is the origin of my creativity began.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?
My husband and I came home from walking our dogs one evening and I asked him if he was up for an idea that was quickly brewing in my head (which entailed of spending too long of a time in our guest bathroom)! He showed zero hesitation and ran with my creative heart. Today that ‘idea’ is resting at 1.9 million video views on TikTok and 1.8 million views on Instagram. We never expected anything from creating our “Emperor’s New Groove” inspired video. All we truly hoped for was to bring joy and laughter to whoever came across it, so we are absolutely overwhelmed with gratitude for the response.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?
Some ways I’d encourage colleagues in this industry to help them thrive and avoid ‘burnout’ would be to make sure you’re listening to your body + allowing yourself to REST! That’s my biggest piece of advice. Self-care is so important to me and as long as you’re prioritizing yourself, it will radiate through your work + relationships: Nourish to flourish.

Additionally, I strive to be intentional with every creation and to avoid posting ‘just to post’. Remember your roots, show up every day with a grateful heart, and continue to surround yourself with people who bring you joy + love.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
My dad has always been my inspiration for all my life. He still says he’s my ‘biggest fan’ after all these years. He gifted me my first video camera when I was 12-years-old and the rest is history. Among an infinite array of things I admire her for, my sister has been supporting my creative heart for years and I couldn’t be more thankful. She’s actually the reason behind why I decided to recently pursue my photography business. We have experienced so many adventures together and a camera was almost always within reach to capture us in our element. Lastly (and certainly not least), my husband is my anchor and light. I’m truly at a loss for words to fully express my appreciation and love for him. He continues to encourage, inspire, and support me through every season of my life. He captures my heart and holds it closer each and every day.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
With every piece of content I share, my hope is to bring joy and laughter to anyone who comes across it. I feel it’s the simplest and most natural way for me to bring goodness to others. My heart is excited to grow with my community as I have plans to return the same kind of warmth they’ve given me by hosting giveaways here and there.
Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt: I first came across that quote on the wall of my gymnastics gym 15 years ago and it has resonated with me ever since. Gymnastics was such an exhilarating time in my life as it was more than just a sport – it allowed me to discover my heart’s true ambitions, develop my character, and revealed how passionate I am about my goals. Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote still echoes within me to this very day. It’s such an eye-opening statement and encourages me to keep going, keep believing, keep turning my dreams into reality: my future is up to me.

Anything specific you’d like to have mentioned in the article?
I am a self-taught creative and publicly began sharing my content (via YouTube) at the age of 12 years old – that’s more than half of my life! I shoot, edit, and film all of my work unless noted otherwise. I feel so inspired to create and reconnect with my audience again.
