Interview with Ankur Garg
Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
I have been good with my words ever since I could start speaking real words as a toddler. I really found my calling with syntax and diction for persuasive sales when I was in college and we had to pack a fraternity toga party but there were 3 feet of snow outside, but rest assured we had a packed house with a 2-1 girl to guy ratio after I was done with my new outreach plan. It was inevitable that I would end up in marketing roles throughout my career and the path to entrepreneurship started with my own creative agency and eventually my own consumer packaged goods brands like SHREDZ, Flavor God, and Skinny Bunny Tea.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started doing this?
I’ll never forget going to my first CPG expo in Columbus Ohio, which is a huge fitness festival every year. In 2013, the year prior I had visited the show to do reconnaissance work and I was shocked to see countless boring booths and a complete lackluster expo experience. I went to work immediately plotting and planning how I was about to disrupt the entire industry. The stage was set and I had 11 booth spaces allocated to me, 10 for the experience and 1 for storage along with 10,000 t-shirts, multiple t-shirt cannons, over $100K in supplements to sell or give away, and a team of 10 athletes and 20 staff ready to put on a show. It was electrifying to see a show where the longest line used to be 100 people, but we had 10,000 people wrapped around the show in a line waiting to enter our booth. To date, if I ever go back to a fitness expo, I smile when I realize that every single booth at the show stole my booth concept from 2013. Don’t worry though my 2014 concept stole the show again that’s a different story.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?
You have to maintain a work-life balance where you prioritize the following five buckets equally: Career Satisfaction, Financial Stability, Family Time, Experiences with Friends, and a Romantic Partner. If any of these areas start to fail because it’s being neglected, you’re going to end up miserable, so you have to constantly juggle these items on your checklist and make sure you’re keeping all of them above water.
I coach several entrepreneurs and most of them don’t realize that career satisfaction and financial stability are two separate topics and the same goes with friends/family when it comes to scheduling experiences with your friends but also finding daily quality time with the family.
None of us can achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
I have had several mentors throughout my life from my parents to successful CEOs, and authors throughout time with meaningful messages. If I had to pick one particular person who I am grateful for it would be Sean Marszalek, the CEO of a group of supplement manufacturers from Pittsburgh, who took time to guide me on regulatory matters, understanding profitability vs revenue models, and most importantly made the products that helped me get in front of millions of consumers across the world.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
During my time as a CPG entrepreneur, I’ve collected over 100,000 testimonials from customers all rating their experience and the products with 4+ stars. If this isn’t proof of making a difference in the world, then I don’t know what is!
Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
“Aut inveniam viam aut faciam” its a quote that is credited to General Hannibal when he crossed the Alps and translates to “I’ll either find a way or make one.” This has been my ethos since I was a kid and I know it still means a ton to anyone I teach it to.
