Interview with Alexa Makky (@alexamakky)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

Today my name is Alexa Makky but I was born Joaquin Rodriguez on June 2, 1970 in Mexico City, Mexico.

My grandfather was an actor and producer in the Golden era of the Mexican cinema. Since I was a little kid I was fascinated with filmmaking and storytelling. In 2001 I moved to the United States to pursue my career in filmmaking. Today I reside in the vibrant city of Miami, USA. I’m a gender-fluid writer, director, published author and life coach.

During the past 22 years have built a successful career as a Film director, producer, and
screenwriter.
I have been involved in writing,
producing, and directing and my films have been distributed internationally in 52 countries and translated to 11 different languages.

In September 2022 I will release my
latest feature film FETISH across the
top streaming platforms.

Can you share the most interest in exciting happened to you since you started doing this?

During the 2020 lockdown, my options to generate income through my craft as a filmmaker were extremely limited and that’s when I decided to pursuit another one of my passions, to help people to overcome fear and I created my course UNINSTALLING FEAR
an 11-day program that focuses on techniques, concepts, and steps to remove fear from our lives so we can all live as the best version of ourselves.

I’m currently working on an updated
version of the same course and a
book I plan to release in January
2023.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?

To use the ultimate human superpowers: imagination, gratitude and kindness. Those 3 things are the key ingredients of success, happiness and prosperity.

None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

I can’t name on particular person. I have had amazing mentors along the way. Filmmaking is a collaborative process and every single person who has been involved in my films played a key role in my success. To see a list of the people who deserve my recognition and gratitude you just have to watch the title and rolling credits of all my 7 feature films.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

You don’t need to be successful to create a positive impact in the world. Making films bring wealth to many artists who participate in all aspects and stages of the process. Making movies provide well paid jobs. Maybe the daughter of someone from the crew was able to go to college to study medicine and some day she will save a life. I believe that even the actions of a broken human being can positively impact many lives and make the world a better place.

Do you have a favourite “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

I frequently remind myself a powerful quote from Charles Darwin: It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself. Since everything in the universe is in constant change adaptability is essential in filmmaking and in life in general.

Anything specific you’d like to have mentioned in the article?

As a genderfluid person I believe I have a broader view about the human condition that has allowed me to better understand the cultural and social challenges that we all face regardless of our gender. This has been instrumental for my filmmaking career. We are all looking for the same and we all share most of the same fears. That’s why I decided to use my feminine expression to show that we all can add value to this world.
