Interview with Alay Shah (@shahalay9)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I am a photographer and a security enthusiast. I always had a fascination with capturing amazing moments of people and nature which brought me to photography. We can never relive a passing moment but we can try to seize and reminisce, that’s where capturing something precious comes in. When I was younger, my hands would shake when I would try to take photos. It is a surprise as to how far I have come along and yet how much farther I have to go. One day I aspire for my work to be considered equivalent to Ansel Adams. I got my camera not so long ago, 2016, and have been learning and growing since then. I believe I have the opportunity to show my work to people through the Internet and let the world see the beauty that I see through my lens. I enjoy animal photography, I believe the challenge of capturing the right moment before they decide to run away is perfect.

Can you share the most interest in exciting happened to you since you started doing this?

I have had so many mentors in my life but the biggest guide anyone can have is experience which is where my photoshoots come in. A friend asked me to capture her graduation pictures as a favor which I happily obliged. Those were a really fun few days, she decided to post some of the pictures. She is such a radiant person and the graduation glow allowed me to create amazing memories. As she shared her pictures, my name got moved around a lot which made me high in demand for graduation and prom photoshoots. Since then, I have been meeting new people and helping them capture their precious moments. I may have started with helping out a friend capture her proud moments but now it has become more than my passion. I recently became an uncle so, I had to step up and start learning how to capture newborns, infants, and now a toddler. None of these have been easy, but I have been highly motivated to capture as many precious moments as I can about Neev my nephew. Some days have been hard but fortunately, we have a bond where he would smile whether there is a camera on him or not. Neev’s mom has been adamant about trying to make Neev famous he has his Instagram page – HappiestBabyOnTheBlock I am proud to say a lot of those amazing moments are captured by me.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?

I would recommend being receptive to ideas and others. Photography is not very complicated but it does require a creative mindset. A lot of people believe that now smartphones are so powerful that SLRs and DSLRs will become obsolete. I agree with them but we have some years before that happens. Try to capture as many amazing moments as possible by then. Some days it will be hard when we try to capture something the way we picture it in our head. Be patient, some skills require time and patience to be honed but as experience is built, your quality of work may be appreciated by everyone around you. I would recommend trying to have the camera on you, almost all the time so, you do not miss a moment. Not all photographs need to be perfect but we can always keep on trying. Always and I repeat always be open to ideas from others it enhances our creativity and innovation. In this area sharing ideas is the best way to grow and help others grow. People may not instantly be able to make a career in this line, but if that is your goal it does happen eventually. Learn from others and through the wonder of the Internet.

None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story? *

I am grateful to many people in my life. There is my brother-in-law, Yakin Shah, who helped me find the cheapest first camera possible. Vivek Patel, a mentor of mine taught me many special tricks in capturing photos. I have learned a lot from the youtube guide on photography. I am grateful to all these people. We were on a camping trip in 2016, this was the time I did not even own a camera, I had to borrow Vivek’s camera. He recently taught me how to take a burst shot. This was the time when I knew very little about the camera but I am still getting so much praise for that picture. Many of my friends still have that picture as their wallpaper.
This reminds me, I have some friends who randomly shoot me a message asking for a wallpaper. It turns out they want my pictures as their laptop and phone wallpapers.

The affection from everyone and guidance from my mentor has helped me get where I am.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world? *

I have used my success to bring goodness to the world by sharing the happiest moment of people and nature. I try to capture candid portraits that when they look back on, make them happy. I have done so many photoshoots in my life that I have lost count. Plus I capture moments on every trip I take which is a lot. I travel all the time and share my photographs with the world. I also, love capturing wildlife and animals in general. I believe their candid moments are something that amazes people and makes them happy.

Do you have a favorites “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
