Interview with ACE Music Entertainment (@acemusicentertainmen)

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I was born in Australia, but English wasn’t my first language. I was born in a traditional Lebanese household where my parents only spoke Arabic and there was no such thing as meat pies or sandwiches. We were also very poor. My parents came to Australia with $100 and nothing else. We couldn’t afford to buy anything my siblings and I wanted like toys, games or electronic devices but there was always food on the table and shelter over our heads. For this, I will always be grateful. My life growing up was surrounded by my family, who were like me where English was a second language, and we knew nothing about the Australian culture. Due to this, I struggled making friends at school and would dream to be like them. Whenever I had any spare time, I would find myself listening to Arabic music and get lost in the rhythm and beat. It was my comfort and the only thing that made me feel like I belonged to something. That’s when I asked my parents for music lessons to learn how to play the keyboard. Unfortunately, due to the cost of living and many financial issues, my parents explained they couldn’t afford music lessons. There was no one to teach me or buy any musical equipment for me. I continued to immerse myself in the music. I would listen to and dream of the day I could afford my own musical gear and play professionally. My dream never died. A couple of years later, there was a garage sale in my street and there was a keyboard up for sale. I saw the opportunity and used all my savings at the time to buy my first keyboard. It wasn’t in the best condition and there were parts missing but I finally saw my dream come to life. I began to lock myself in my room day and night to learn everything about this keyboard and the sounds it made. I taught myself everything. I began to slowly perform in front of my family and gradually became better and better. I asked my cousin for a loan to buy more sounds for the keyboard. My cousin knowing my love and passion for music agreed and with the loan he gave me, I spent it all on different sounds. I eventually got to the stage of feeling confident performing in front of my cousins. From then, I would continue to save and buy everything needed to build a career out of performing Arabic music to the wider community. I would work a day job and come home to my keyboard. With my job, I was able to buy more equipment to allow me to flourish. It took many years of hard work and sacrificing but I am now at a stage where I have my own company, many people working for me, I am completely booked out every weekend (and often weeknights) and I have never looked back. I share my culture and my traditions and everything I was raised to be with the people around me and their happiness is priceless.

Can you share the most interest in exciting happened to you since you started doing this?

The most interesting story since I started ACE Music Entertainment was when an elderly father reached out to me. He wanted to book my team and I for his son’s wedding, but he explained he was old and on a very tight budget but wanted the best for his only child. He went on to explain that he has no financial support as his wife had passed away and must do everything on his own. I worked around his budget and gave him the best package I could to ensure both he and his son was happy. I went on to organise everything for the event including live singers, sound systems and a band for the wedding. Everything was booked and organised. Fast forward to the day of the wedding, I was meant to perform at both the house and the reception. Upon arriving to the house, I could see that this family were poor and were living in a rough situation. I couldn’t believe that an elderly man was doing what he was doing and providing what he was for the event. It seemed like he was overwhelmed and stressed. I didn’t think he was going to last the day from the running around he was doing and the pressure he was putting on himself. Nevertheless, I started to set up as we had planned and was getting everything ready for the day ahead. As I was setting up, I saw him clutch his hand at his chest as though he was struggling to breathe. I became very worried, so I decided to approach him and ask if he was okay. He explained that although it was the wedding day, he needed a miracle as he didn’t have enough money to pay for the catering. People were arriving to the house and in a sea of people, I saw how ashamed he felt being unable to provide for his son. As he was explaining his situation, his eyes became glossy and hung his head in defeat as though he was ready to give up. I tried to motivate him and keep him happy on his son’s wedding day, but I could see he was miserable on what is meant to be the best day of his life. In that moment, I saw my own father. A man who struggled financially and wanted nothing but my happiness. I took this man’s hand and explained that the whole entertainment on the day including the reception would be free of charge. His face instantly eased, and it was like he instantly looked younger. He was extremely grateful and wouldn’t stop praising me. If I was in that situation, I would want someone to help me, and it is a small way I could help this man and his son. ACE Music Entertainment isn’t just about making money, it about providing happiness at every single event we attend and ensuring that everyone has the best time. I believe in paying it forward and it’s not a story I tell very often but it’s a story I will never forget. I keep in contact with this man. He often calls and checks in with me and I do the same knowing I was able to help someone when they were the most vulnerable.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them thrive and not “burn out”?

Due to the nature of most parties and events being at nights, we often become night owls and sacrifice nights with our families, personal events, a night of fun with friends and many more to join other people and perform for them. It is also very tiring as we have heavy gear like speakers, stands, sound machines, keyboards and many more equipment that needs to be set up and packed up at the end of each night – not to mention many flights of stairs and endless hours on our legs unable to sit down. It can be very easy to become burnt out and no longer motivated to perform at events. We often go hours with no food or drink breaks, bathroom breaks or even a chance to check in on our families. It is understandable that many colleagues choose to leave the industry, but my motivation is the happiness that I bring to people’s events. I have many clients opening their houses to me or trusting me for the most important events in their lives. How can I not give them the best performance and ensure that I have each person on the dance floor partying until their feet are hurting? My tips to help my colleagues are to get plenty of day rest to stay motivated for the night and to spend time with their family and friends during the day as they will need to make sacrifices at night. I would also say to my colleagues that we are all in this together and to always help any fellow entertainers or performers if you see them struggling. Preparation and communication are key at ensuring that the night runs smoothly and perfectly. Taking breaks every now and again is also necessary for your wellbeing. We are not robots that can keep going 24/7. Listen to your body and ask for help if you need it. At the end of the day, there is no price to bring happiness to the people around you and if you follow these tips, you won’t feel burnt out but motivated to keep going.

None of us can succeed without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

My number one supporter and the person who has made the biggest impact on me and my business would be my wife. When we met, I would spend hours talking about music and my passion for it. Instead of going out as any couple would while dating, she would spend time listening to me play on my keyboard and give me feedback. My events were starting to kick off slowly and it was all based on word of mouth. She insisted for me to join Instagram and promised to help me make it grow. We ran the account together and she became my social media expert. Instead of date nights, she would assist me at my events by recording content for Instagram to help me expand my business. It then started to blossom, and I became busier with more people wanting me at their events. My wife helped kick off my career to places I never thought I could reach. She never questioned me when I bought more equipment or more sounds. She never complained when the people around her were going out with their partners and I was at events completing neglecting her, but she stuck around and continued to help my business grow. I eventually made her my wife. She spends most nights at home by herself, attends family events for my family and her family alone, barely spends any time with me, raises our kids to be the best they can be, and she does it with a smile. She ensures the house is always clean and makes sure I always come home to a hot meal. She understands the passion I have for my business and has never stopped me from achieving my dreams. I owe my success to her, and I wouldn’t dare to take that for granted.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I have used my success with my business to bring goodness to the world by embracing the culture and tradition that I love and was raised with to others around me that share the same love. Music has a way of bringing people together. Family, friends, work functions, religious functions and every milestone in life can be celebrated with music. There is nothing better than seeing everyone dancing to the same beat, partying with the biggest smile on their faces as they embrace and sing along with the people around them. There is so much goodness in bringing people together and my music does that. When the music starts, everyone forgets their problems and let loose. It’s a release that every soul needs. When you see the dance floor full, the peoples’ happiness is my success. During COVID-19, my work came to a stop. There were complete lockdowns, and we were unable to do anything or visit anyone. All events were cancelled, and all functions were postponed. In this time, many people fell into a state of depression. I saw people on my social media page begging me to play live for them via zoom. The need for music and dancing was still there but it was tarnished by the scare of COVID-19. I saw a need in the world, and I used my success to go live on Instagram and play live music so my clients could hear it in their houses. I scored thousands of views and many comments about how happy they were and how it instantly changed their moods. Although we were trapped in our houses, we were all able to share the love of music and happiness it brings. I saw how happy it made everyone and it brought families that were fighting from being trapped in the same house together, getting along again. This became very popular and I would often go live and share my music and success with my followers and the people who needed it the most.

Do you have a favorite “written Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?

My favourite life lesson quote is – Never give up. I know it sounds cliché and we hear it all the time, but it is something that I always say to myself as I have found so many obstacles and hurdles in my life that could have potentially stopped me from being successful with my music business. I could have given up my music career the second my parents told me they couldn’t buy me a keyboard let alone afford music lessons. I didn’t give up until I bought my first keyboard from a garage sale with all my savings and without locking myself in my room every day and night and try teaching myself how to use it. I could have given up my career when I realised I had no money for different sounds, but I didn’t give up. I asked for a loan and paid it back. I could have given up and only worked a day job and save for a house or for a car, but I didn’t give up and used my savings on speakers, stands, sounds and equipment to get myself started. There were many times I could have given up when my parents were struggling and couldn’t pay bills. I could have given up my music career and given my money to my parents instead I gave myself nothing and gave it all to my parents while I went a few weeks with no money to spend on my music career. I never gave up. The one time I almost gave up was when my parents approached me to tell me that we were about to lose our house as we couldn’t keep up the repayments. It was when my career was just getting successful. I then took it upon myself to start selling my equipment for extra money. It left me with only one keyboard, and I had no idea how I was going to attend events that I was booked in for. I didn’t give up. I stayed passionate and motivated. I asked my friend in the music industry to hire out some equipment from him and he said yes! I was able to attend a few events to make money. Half the money went to the hiring of the equipment and the other half to my family that was struggling. I did this for six months until my parents were able to survive above the water. I slowly began buying equipment again and building my career again. I could have given up when I got married and had children so I could spend more time at home and spend more time with my family but I didn’t give up. My wife supported me and I knew this was my path to take. I will never give up. I will continue to stay motivated and keep going even when it seems the world is against you.
