INTERVIEW @ KATHARINE HAMNETT LONDON
Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
I am an artist at heart, and always loved practicing with different mediums, like painting and sculpting. However, as I got older and got more control over my wardrobe and what I could wear, there was no end to the kind of eclectic clothes I would design for myself.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?
Make sure you are doing something every day that excites you, rather than making you dread going to work that morning. Always remember that work is not work when you truly love it.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
I am grateful to so many of my childhood and college friends, who’d always be the first ones to see my designs and then give me honest feedback and help me change and become better at my game.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
I have tried to make Katharine Hamnett a more sustainable and eco-friendly brand in the hopes that it encourages other companies in the fashion industry to follow suit. We were only given one Earth and we have to do everything to protect it, and thus I hope that our brand is a beacon of light and shows that ethical production is possible and profitable, for us and the world.
Do you have a favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that was relevant to you in your life?
“Life’s too short to wear boring clothes.” – Cushnie et Ochs.
This quote is not only quite amusing but also reflects my outlook towards fashion. Designing clothes has been a way for me to have fun, push the boundaries and do whatever I felt like doing. It’s kept me interested and helped me lead a very exciting life that I’ll always be grateful for.
